Two pedestrians struck within days on Madison Avenue

Two pedestrians were struck by cars while walking on Madison Avenue over the span of a week.

The most recent incident resulted in an arrest. A 44-year-old Bainbridge Island man was jailed Monday, Sept. 24 for driving under the influence and allegedly committing vehicular assault after he struck another car while driving near the library.

A pedestrian walking by the library was struck by the car hit by the allegedly impaired driver. The walker was injured, as well as the other driver.

The driver of the car that caused the crash was uninjured, and he told police he’d had two drinks with dinner before driving home.

He had not noticed the car in front of him, a Toyota Prius driven by a 46-year-old Bainbridge woman, slow to turn into the library parking lot, he said.

Unable to stop, he slammed into the Prius with enough force to push the car up onto the sidewalk, where it hit a 47-year-old Bainbridge woman.

The man said he immediately exited his car to assist the woman, who, it was soon ascertained by medical personnel, suffered a probable fracture to her leg. Both she and the driver of the Prius were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police noted the man’s dilated pupils and the strong odor of alcoholic beverages about him. His eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was occasionally slurred.

He willingly submitted to a series of field sobriety tests, at which he performed poorly and was promptly arrested and taken to the police station for a BAC test.

When given a pen to sign a statement indicating he’d been read his rights, the man reportedly instead did not sign the paper and proceeded to stare very intently at the arresting officer in an obviously threatening way, according to a police incident report. When the officer asked for the pen back, the man raised it up in his fist as if to stab the officer.

A struggle ensued, during which the man was quickly and forcibly subdued and made to drop the pen. But he quickly grabbed it again with his free hand, and the officer again made him drop it, this time by pulling on his thumb.

At this point a second officer reportedly entered the room and removed the pen from the man’s reach, and he was ultimately again subdued and handcuffed.

Because of the outburst, police decided it was unsafe to proceed with the BAC test. His blood was drawn and booked as evidence.

It was the second time in a week a pedestrian had been struck by a car and injured.

At about 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 a 13-year-old Bainbridge girl was struck by a car while in a crosswalk. She sustained injuries to her head, knee, elbow and hand and was taken to the hospital in Bremerton for treatment.

The driver, a 71-year-old Bainbridge man, was traveling south on Madison Avenue at about 20 mph and said he did not see the girl, possibly because of her attire; gray pants and a gray jacket.
