Sunshine Yogurt surpasses $50K donation mark

Sunshine Frozen Yogurt’s “no-tip jar” is a lucrative venture.

The Island Village Shopping Center eatery collects donations for an ever-rotating assortment of nonprofit organizations via the prominently placed jar, with all “tips” going to the chosen group — as well at least 10 percent of the shop’s profits for a two-month period as well.

Recently, Sunshine Frozen Yogurt celebrated a major milestone: having donated more than $50,000 to an array of nonprofits, both those with local ties and some specializing in issues of national importance.

The current recipient is Bainbridge Youth Services. Past beneficiaries include Partners in Health, the Syrian Medical Association, PAWS, the Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Island Association, Puget Sound Restoration Fund and the West Sound Wildlife Shelter, among others.

The shop’s owners, Dan Martin and Teri Dettmer, credit the program’s success to their generous customers and eight employees, who are encouraged to suggest specific causes and groups they’d like to see benefit from the fundraising efforts and also prepare information for the bulletin board above the collection jar.

Martin and Dettmer took over the shop about two years ago. Sunshine Frozen Yogurt boasts a bevy of flavors in its artisan yogurt offerings (each flavor is hand crafted using organic yogurt and served with compostable cups and spoons) as well as toppings and real fruit smoothies.
