Rep. Hansen to press Legislature to protect DACA students

State Rep. Drew Hansen is reassuring students who are in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that he will fight to retain their financial aid for school.

Hansen’s promise Tuesday followed the Trump Administration’s announcement that it would rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also called DACA, which protects undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children from immediate deportation.

“My bill (HB 1488) will protect DACA students from losing College Bound state financial aid if DACA is eliminated,” said Hansen, a 23rd District lawmaker and chairman of the Washington House Higher Education Committee.

“We will push for this in the next legislative session. DACA students are (still) welcome here,” Hansen added.

Hansen is a Bainbridge Island Democrat whose district represents part of Kitsap County, including Bainbridge, Poulsbo, Kingston, Silverdale, Winslow and East Bremerton.
