Large crowds expected on ferry routes for the holiday week

Catching a boat or knowing someone who is?

Be prepared for a busy, busy holiday week on Washington ferries.

The next few weeks, including the Independence Day holiday, will be busy for Washington State Ferries — more than a million riders are expected over the Fourth of July holiday week, according to WSF.

Travelers are being asked to plan ahead if sailing from Friday, June 29 to Monday, July 9. WSF expects big crowds and long lines throughout the Independence Day week, especially on both weekends and the day before and after the holiday.

In addition to crowds, Colman Dock (the system’s largest terminal) remains under construction and will have access changes starting Sunday, July 1.

WSF officials note the changes will add congestion to Seattle’s busy waterfront, so travelers should allow some extra travel time if sailing out of Colman Dock.

The drive-on entrance at Colman Dock moves on Sunday, July 1.

The entrance for all vehicles, including vanpools and motorcycles, will move to a neighboring pier, south of the toll plaza, at South Jackson Street starting July 1.

People driving onto a ferry will enter at South Jackson Street from northbound or southbound Alaskan Way South, drive north in a dedicated toll plaza access lane, and buy tickets at the existing toll plaza.

WSF notes there are no access changes for pedestrians, travelers riding bicycles will continue to use the Yesler Way bicycle entrance next to the toll plaza.

Travelers arriving at Colman Dock will see the passenger terminal is smaller while work continues to replace the terminal. The load zones in front of the terminal will remain the same and there will be additional on-street parking between Yesler Way and Madison Street through the busy summer months.
