Island vigil slated in wake of Charlottesville attack

A community vigil will be held from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14 at Winslow Green in remembrance of the victims of Saturday’s terrorist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Let us gather for a vigil in remembrance of Charlottesville’s domestic terrorist attack,” Kath Wilham wrote in an online event announcement. “Let us call it out for what it is.”

Islanders are encouraged to share word of the event on social media, and those attending should bring a candle.

The gathering will reportedly include poetry readings, musical performances and a moment of silence. All are welcome to attend.

Protests at the “Unite the Right” rally held by white nationalists turned violent in Charlottesville on Saturday, Aug. 12, as white supremacists clashed with counter-demonstrators.

The confrontation turned deadly after a protester from the “Unite the Right” rally drove a speeding car into a crowd of anti-racist marchers. Heather Heyer, 32, was killed, and more than 30 were reportedly injured during the rally.
