Island rotary celebrates 70 years of service

The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island is celebrating its 70th anniversary on Monday, Sept. 25 — 70 years to the day from when the club received its charter from Rotary International.

The celebration will occur at a regular club meeting, held at Saint Barnabas Evangelical Church.

There will be a review of some of the notable achievements that have occurred in the life of the club, and past presidents former members will join the meeting to reflect on how the Bainbridge branch has been a model of the Rotary International motto: “Service Above Self.”

Some of the club’s most noteworthy accomplishments include: helping build (1960 and 1961), expand (1996) and remodel (1991 and 2016) the Bainbridge Public Library (total grants of $280,000), helping establish the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District (1965), funding grants to other nonprofit organizations for their support of the community (178 grants for over $873,000 during the last eight years).

The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island has also done much to benefit local youths, including helping build sports fields and recreational facilities (1962, 1971, 1989, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2013 — total funding $620,000), providing college and technical school scholarships to Bainbridge Island students and residents (91 scholarships for over $258,000 during the last eight years), cosponsoring Bainbridge Youth Services programs (2013 and 2015), and helping fund the composite program at Bainbridge High School (2015-$56,000).

The club has also completed many international humanitarian projects, such as drilling wells in Uganda and providing educational and sanitation equipment in Guatemala.

The Bainbridge Island Rotary Club provided over $200,000 seed money that has resulted in more than $2 million for these projects during the last 16 years.
