As the July 4 quickly approaches, the Bainbridge Island Fire Department is reminding islanders the do's and don'ts of a safe holiday.

As the July 4 quickly approaches, the Bainbridge Island Fire Department is reminding islanders the do’s and don’ts of a safe holiday.

Fireworks are of particular concern as recent high temperatures increase the fire danger.

In 2011, fireworks were responsible for approximately 17,800 fires nationwide, damaging buildings and vehicles. Approximately 9,600 visits to the hospital were made that same year from firework injuries.

To help keep the damage down on Bainbridge, the department is suggesting the following tips to ensure a safe Fourth of July:

• Keep a hose and bucket of water nearby and make sure all fireworks are extinguished;

• Only adults should use fireworks;

• Use fireworks at least 25 feet away from buildings;

• Do not use sky lanterns which can travel far while still burning; and

• Monitor pets. More pets go lost on the July 4 holiday than any other time of the year as loud noises can scare them.
