Two bicyclists were hit by cars on Madison Avenue in separate incidents less than a week apart.

Both accidents happened when visibility was limited due to darkness, and neither of the bicyclists were seriously hurt, according to reports taken by Bainbridge police.

The first accident happened just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20 when a 24-year-old Suquamish man was pedaling north on Madison Avenue when he got to the four-way stop at the Wyatt Way intersection.

He stopped and then started north, but a 48-year-old Seattle woman in a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan also at the intersection began to drive through the intersection and struck the cyclist.

Police cited the woman for failing to stop.

The second accident happened at 4:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25.

A 45-year-old Poulsbo man in a 1998 Acura was delivering newspapers and driving south on Madison Avenue when he made a right turn into the exit-only lane of a business and collided with a bicyclist who was pedaling south on Madison.

The driver said he did not see the bicyclist on his right, who was in the bike lane. The bicyclist said the driver made a sudden right turn in front of him and he could not stop in time before he struck the passenger side door of the vehicle.

The bicyclist, a 38-year-old Bainbridge man who was on his way to the ferry, complained of back, chest and leg pains. He was treated at the scene by medics but did not want to be taken to the hospital. An officer gave him a courtesy ride to the ferry terminal.

Police ticketed the driver for an improper right turn and no proof of insurance.
