BIPD holds drug take back event Saturday

The Bainbridge Island Police Department is holding a prescription drug reclamation event, part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at the police station (625 Winslow Way East).

“This twice-yearly event is the most environmentally responsible way to discard unwanted medications,” said Bainbridge Police Chief Matthew Hamner.

“Don’t take the chance that your unwanted medications will end up in the water supply, in the landfill, or in the wrong hands. Drop them off and let us take care of them for you,” he said.

The drive is for unwanted medications only, police said, and sharps such as needles will not be accepted, nor will intravenous solutions, injectables, syringes or medical waste.

You may deposit loose pills directly into the disposal box, or submit the entire container. However, if you dispose of the entire container, the police encourage you to remove personal identifying information from the label by either taking it entirely or obscuring it with a permanent marker.

All participants must retain possession of their own medication during the surrender process, as law enforcement personnel may not handle the medications at any time.
