BHS food classes make move to BARN

Born in a barn?

No, but that’s where some Bainbridge High students will take a few classes this coming year.

With the 100 Building out of commission and a new structure on the way to replace the outdated building on the BHS campus, the Bainbridge Island School District has reached an agreement with the Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) to use the nonprofit’s new building on Three Tree Lane for displaced students.

The school district and BARN have signed a contract to lease part of the BARN building for culinary arts classes for BHS students.

Four sections of food instruction will be held at BARN, with no more than 96 students total per semester (and no more than 24 students per class). The classes will use BARN’s commercial kitchen, as well as the facility’s Great Room and upstairs restrooms.

The high school will use those portions of the BARN building from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

The district expects to use BARN for the 2019-2020 school year, and also for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year.

BARN will receive $8,000 each semester, and the money will be paid from the district’s capital projects fund.
