Best Bets for May 18-20 | The Bainbridge Blab

This weekend kicks off with one of the last home sporting events of the school year:

The Bainbridge High varsity boys lacrosse team will play their first playoff match of the postseason at 7 p.m. Friday, May 18 against Lake Washington.

The final match of the regular season was a no-contest outing against Lakeside, at home, on May 4.

Entering the postseason, the Spartans boast an overall season record of 9-8-1 (6-3-1 in conference), and the top spot in the 3A Metro Division One standings.

Then, on Saturday, hometown musicians Wes Corbett and Simon Chrisman will return to Bainbridge Island for a special Space Craft concert at 7:30 p.m.

It is an especially important how, Chrisman said, as the duo are about to release their first recording.

“Wes and I both grew up on the island and now both make our livings as touring musicians,” he said.

“Wes, based out of Nashville, and myself, based in northern California. We’ve both played on the island many times, together or with different bands, but are especially excited for this show, as we’re about to release our record.

“And Bainbridge is our hometown,” Chrisman added.

The show is all-ages appropriate. Tickets, $15 in advance, $20 at the door, are available www.spacecraftpresents.org.

Seattle singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Lydia Ramsey will open.

Award-winning Pacific Northwest scribe Peter Donahue will visit Eagle Harbor Book Company to discuss his new volume of three short novels – all set on the Olympic Peninsula — “Three Sides Water” at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

In “Three Sides Water,” Donahue delves deep into the lives of three young characters who, learning to act for themselves and make decisions that will shape their lives forever, persevere in an often violent, insensible world.

Donahue’s characters are ordinary people defined by history and place who transcend the limitations imposed on them. Across the dramatic landscape of the Pacific Northwest’s Olympic Peninsula, they take extraordinary steps to show what it means to become the agent of one’s own destiny.

Finally, do you have a young person you would like to introduce to fly fishing or have them get some practice in prior to heading out to fish this spring?

Well, get in line on this: Battle Point Park will host a Youth Fly Fishing Expo from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

Fishers and youngsters interested in learning more about fishing will gather at the north end of park near the parking lot. There will be fly-tying and fly-casting clinics, fish-and-stream biology education, casting for accuracy games with prizes and fishing in the pond.

Rods, flies and materials will be provided.

The cost is $15 for youth ages 6 through 17; there is no charge parents (must accompany children 6 through 13). The event is sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District, Trout Unlimited, Bainbridge Island Fly Fishers, Sage and Peninsula Outfitters.

To register or for more information, contact the parks district at 206-842-2306, ext. 1.
