Best Bets for April 28–30 | The Bainbridge Blab

Look at you, you’ve made it to another weekend! You’ve braved work/school, tackled obstacles, done chores/housework; all the while with a racist pumpkin as your president for the last 100 days. Great work! You deserve a reward, so treat yourself to a weekend well-spent, Here’s your best bets.

On Friday join Olaf Ribeiro, plant pathologist and arborist, as he leads two tours of the historic and champion trees that grace downtown Winslow during a pair of tree walks on Friday, April 28. Walks begin at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and the annual tree walks, sponsored by the Bainbridge Historical Museum, are always popular. Make a reservation at 206-842-2773 or stop by the museum and sign up.

On Saturday, come see the region’s third consecutive year of celebrating independent bookstores, exclusive merchandise, author appearances, giveaways and the rigorous Indie Bookstore Challenge, as customers celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.

In Kitsap County, Eagle Harbor Book Company and The Traveler, both on Winslow Way, and Liberty Bay Books’ stores in Poulsbo and Bremerton, will host special events throughout the day. Eagle Harbor Books will have hourly (on the half hour) Literary Cupcake Walks in the store, and will host some of the authors of the “Nasty Women Project” from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

There will be special merchandise available, sales announced throughout the day and portrait picture taking for teams doing the Indie Bookstore Challenge.

What is the Indie Bookstore Challenge? For the truly dedicated only, visit 19 participating local stores on April 29, get your passport stamped at each store, and receive 25 percent off at all participating stores for a year. In 2015, 42 valiant souls made the trek, and last year that number grew to 120 bookstore champions.

On Sunday, take the day off to enjoy some rest and relaxation. You’ll surely need it if you just braved the roiling masses at 19 different bookstores on Saturday. Lick your wounds and ready your mind for the week to come, because the relentless passage of time has now pried your weekend away from you like a doctor from an overbooked United flight.
