Bainbridge’s costs for homeless camp cleanup were minimal

It cost $706 for the city of Bainbridge Island to clean up the abandoned homeless camp next to Highway 305 last week, according to figures provided by the city.

Bainbridge police spent an hour, with the help of a volunteer, removing garbage, tents and other debris from the wooded campsite on the west side of Highway 305 north of High School Road on Monday, Feb. 25.

The stretch of property, owned by the Washington State Department of Transportation, has been used by homeless people as a campsite for years.

Complaints and concerns about the camp ramped up over the past year as other homeless people began moving into the woods next to Highway 305 and the camps became more visible to travelers on the island’s main thoroughfare.

The property was posted by WSDOT before the camp was removed, and officials said the last two homeless men who had been living there had moved out weeks before the cleanup operation.

Another homeless camp, north of the one that was removed, is still inhabited. Officials said earlier that two people are living there but have not been asked to vacate.

City officials said the cost of dumpster rental and dumping fees from Bainbridge Disposal were $462.

The work of the five police officers at the site for an hour cost $244, according to city spokeswoman Kristen Drew.
