Bainbridge seeks consultant for new roundabout on Madison Avenue

The long-talked-about roundabout at Madison Avenue and Wyatt Way is finally coming closer to spinning steering wheels on one of Bainbridge’s busiest arterials: City hall is currently seeking firms that can design improvements at the intersection.

The long-talked-about roundabout at Madison Avenue and Wyatt Way is finally coming closer to spinning steering wheels on one of Bainbridge’s busiest arterials: City hall is currently seeking firms that can design improvements at the intersection.

Bainbridge officials recently put out a “request for qualifications” for consultants interested in the work, and companies are facing an Oct. 19 deadline to submit packages.

The city is planning improvements — including better sidewalks and bike lanes — that would stretch along Wyatt Way from Madison Avenue to Lovell Avenue.

The $3.7 million project would be partially funded by $2.5 million in grants that are already in hand, according to city officials.

The city is looking for a consultant that can guide the development of the project, from creating a communication plan, to hosting community involvement meetings that would take public input into the mix when a design is fashioned for the street improvements, to surveying the alignment of the road fixes and more.

The chosen firm will also come up with a detailed plan (with specifications and cost estimates) for a project that will include bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the street, stormwater system improvements, and a “mini-roundabout” at Wyatt Way and Madison Avenue, an intersection that sees approximately 10,000 cars pass through every day.

The consultant will also be expected to be available for city council briefings, as well as support services during the bidding and construction phases of the project.

City officials said Bainbridge hopes to pick a consultant by Nov. 9, with the final scope of the project, with estimates, coming into focus by Dec. 1.

Plans, specifications and estimates for the project would be complete by Dec. 31, with construction scheduled for 2017.

The Madison Avenue-Wyatt Way roundabout isn’t the only roundabout in the city’s near future.

The city’s public works department is also planning to install a roundabout at the busy intersection at Sportsman’s Club Road and New Brooklyn Road.
