Bainbridge school fundraiser postponed after student’s death

The tragic and unexpected death of a sophomore student at Bainbridge High this week has prompted the cancelation of Wednesday night’s “How Bainbridge Grads are Changing the World.”

The fundraiser for the Bainbridge Schools Foundation will be rescheduled at a later date, organizers have announced.

Bainbridge police and other law enforcement agencies launched a wide search Tuesday for Audrey Anna Hickey, 15, after she went missing Monday morning after signing into the school’s library. The search was called off Tuesday night.

Peter Bang-Knudsen, superintendent of the Bainbridge Island School District, sent an email note to parents of students at Bainbridge High School and Eagle Harbor High School Wednesday to announce her passing.

“She has been a student in the Bainbridge Island School District since kindergarten and will be missed by staff and students throughout our community,” Bang-Knudsen wrote.

Counseling staff from across the school district, as well as neighboring school districts, were available Wednesday at the high school to help support grieving students. Five counselors were immediately available at BHS, and one at Eagle Harbor High.

Bainbridge Youth Services also is providing counseling assistance.
