Bainbridge Island seeks consultant for greenhouse gas inventory

The city of Bainbridge Island is looking for a consultant to develop a baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the city and community emissions.

The Bainbridge Island City Council is seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through compliance with federal, state and regional policies while developing local strategies. To reach this goal, the city wants to establish a baseline of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and obtain the capability to track GHG emissions on Bainbridge on an ongoing basis.

City officials said the GHG inventory will provide a better understanding of the greenhouse gas emissions generated by human activities in the community and how Bainbridge’s carbon footprint compares with the rest of Kitsap County.

The team will provide information about transportation, electricity use in residential homes and commercial buildings, city operations, agriculture and forest land and waste disposal, among others.

The GHG inventory will allow us to measure emissions, inform city policies and track progress over time. Officials note it will also help reduce GHG emissions by setting reduction targets, and the information will be used to develop a roadmap for climate change action.

This inventory is expected to be the first in a multi-phase, long-term climate change planning effort.

The city’s Climate Change Advisory Committee, which is composed of scientists and other subject matter experts, will provide guidance on the GHG inventory.

Proposals from interested consultants are due by 4 p.m. Friday, May 25.
