Bainbridge was recently beat out by Port Angeles for the title “Best town in the West” in Outside Magazine’s fifth annual Best Town Ever online contest during the second round of voting.

Port Angeles racked up 50.69 percent of the vote for the win, totaling 10,646 to Bainbridge’s 10,358.

The other winners in the “West” category include Glenwood Springs, Colorado (defeated Whitefish, South Dakota), Pagosa Springs, Colorado (defeated Santa Fe, New Mexico) and Flagstaff, Arizona (defeated Hilo, Hawaii).

Port Angeles now faces Glenwood Springs in the third round of the national contest.

Round three voting began on May 13 and will end on Monday, May 18, at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

The winner will be the town with the most votes, an official announcement is expected on June 5. Visit www.outsideonline.com to cast your vote.

According to Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles won by 28 votes over Santa Barbara, California in the first round of the contest last week.

Results of the first round narrowed the field from 64 select towns to 32. The second round brought things down to 16. Each consecutive round will cut the list in half, with pairs of towns winning in each contest region.

Towns were originally selected based on a variety of criteria by the magazine staff.

“Picking the locations in our fifth annual Best Town Ever contest wasn’t easy,” the contest description read. “We looked for places with great access to trails and public lands, thriving restaurants and neighborhoods, and, of course, a good beer scene — all while excluding the winners and runners-up from the past three years to make room for hidden gems, underdogs and towns on the rise.”
