Bainbridge council considers marina rezone

Nearly a year after it was first brought before the Bainbridge Island City Council, two pieces of land owned by Bainbridge Marina may finally get rezoned.

A land-use change from “Residential” to “Water-Dependent Industrial” will allow the marina to expand its boatyard along the south shore of Eagle Harbor, where it operates next door to the Bainbridge Island Yacht Club.

The Bainbridge council will consider approving the rezone at its meeting Tuesday.

Darrell and Vannie McNabb, owners of Bainbridge Marina, submitted a rezone request to the city in February 2013.

The land dispute has been ongoing since 2005, however.

Prior to the city’s incorporation, the marina had permits from the county to develop the properties for its boatyard.

By 2005, those permits were no longer applicable.

With the city’s incorporation, the properties were residentially zoned and required a comprehensive plan amendment and rezone to be developed for the marina.

Despite pushback by residents in the area who argued expanding the marina would further disrupt the view of Eagle Harbor and devalue shoreline properties, the city and McNabbs entered a legal agreement in January 2013 to finally get the request off the shelf.

According to city documents, the city agreed to process the rezone request in good faith once the comp plan was amended to include the land-use change.

The amendment was made last fall.

Now, the council will have the final say in bringing the dispute to an end.

The city council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at city hall.
