Bainbridge blotter | No check but no crime

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

FRIDAY, MAY 4

4:27 p.m. Police were called to an island rehab center where a 58-year-old Bremerton woman said her $30 Social Security check had been stolen.

The facility director said she’d spoken with the business office and staff and determined that the woman never actually received a check while at the facility. She also spoke with the woman’s representative, who said she had not received a Social Security check since 2016, long before she moved in.

The woman is in the island facility for terminal hospice care, the director said, and on a high dose of morphine, which can affect her cognitive abilities.

Only one other theft had been reported at the care center in the last five months, the director said: a 79-year-old Suquamish man who said he’d been robbed of $500 in cash. He also has health-related memory problems.

Police found no proof that a theft had occurred.
