Bainbridge blotter | Fighting drunk

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 3

10:39 p.m. Police were called to the scene of a fight between four people in front of a downtown Winslow bar and restaurant.

Officers saw a man walking in the street on Parfitt Way, approached and asked if he’d been involved. He said yes.

The man, 44, of Buckley, was “extremely intoxicated.” Asked if he’d been hurt, the man said no. Asked what happened, the man had “difficulty conjuring his memories,” police said.

He said he’d been in the bar to visit his son, who worked there, and they were going to load a motorcycle into his truck so as to go trail riding over the holiday. He said he’d had no drinks in the bar, but was sitting inside with a friend when he’d had a verbal altercation with another man.

He said he could not remember exactly what had been said, but that when he left the bar he was “jumped” by at least four assailants. He’d been kicked and punched, he said, but could not recall how the fight ended.

After speaking with other people who’d been there, police learned the man had been in the bar earlier, yelling, calling people names and using derogatory language. When he returned later, the shouting had resumed, ultimately leading to the fight outside.

The manager told police that although he did not see the four men after they’d gone outside, or who actually instigated the assault, “the groups both wanted to fight each other.”

Police ultimately decided it was a mutual altercation and arrested nobody.

A report was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office and all involved were given business cards with the case number.

Both parties were reportedly pleased with the result.
