The Bainbridge Schools Foundation's Keep Our Island Schools Strong campaign has raised $130,000 in donations, pledges and matching money, the school district announced Thursday.

The foundation's goal is to raise $650,000 to rehire teachers were who were laid off due to budget cuts. KISS hopes to raise $400,000 by June 30 and another $250,000 by February.

There is "matching money for all new donors up to $30,000," district spokeswoman Pam Keyes said.

The school district has reduced nearly 13 percent of its operating budget since June 2008, and issued reduction in force letters for a second year in a row this May.
