A driver traveling northbound Tuesday morning on State Route 305 braked and swerved to avoid a rear-end collision, lost control of her vehicle, crossed into the southbound lane and rolled into a ditch.

Police said the vehicle landed on its side against tree, facing south. The woman, who was the Land Rover's only occupant, was trapped inside and Bainbridge Island Fire Department helped remove her from the vehicle. She was released unharmed.

According to the police statement, the driver, a 37-year-old Bainbridge woman, said she was distracted by a hitchhiker and traffic had slowed when she looked back to the road.

Traffic in both directions was congested for about an hour after the 8 a.m. accident occurred, but it didn't stopped.
