Kitsap Treasurer pick could be decided next week

The three Kitsap County Commissioners have all held private interviews with the three candidates for the open treasurer’s position, but have yet to compare information about their preferences.

The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Barbara Stephenson, which took effect on Feb. 17. On March 1 the Democratic party selected three possible candidates, from which the commissioners must select one to serve out the remainder of Stephenson’s term.

The commissioners could discuss their preferences at a study session next week, announcing their choice ahead of the scheduled March 22 confirmation.

“When we nominated (North Kitsap Commissioner) Steve (Bauer) we did it in a small room and then moved next door to the commissioners’ chamber to swear him in,” said Central Kitsap Commissioner Josh Brown. “It would be nice to make the decision ahead of time, to give the new treasurer’s family the opportunity to attend the ceremony.”

The three candidates are Poulsbo CPA Meredith Green, former Poulsbo Mayor Kathryn Quade and Bremerton resident Isaac Delgado.

The commissioners could discuss the appointment during one of four possible study sessions: March 15 (morning or afternoon), March 17 (morning) or March 22 (morning).

All study sessions are open to the public, and are held in the county administration building in Port Orchard.
