Bainbridge Island Police arrested an island resident and issued arrest warrants for three other suspects Monday in connection with the alleged assault of two island men during the early morning hours of Aug. 22.

Police arrested Max Kauffman, 20, on charges of burglary and assault when he arrived at Bainbridge Island Municipal Court for a hearing involving unrelated charges.

According to police Lt. Sue Shultz, the two men were sitting in their home when four men kicked down the door and began attacking the victims. The two men sustained minor injuries to the head, face and body and are recovering at home. Shultz said the victims and the suspects may have known each other.

Kauffman was arraigned today and pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against him. He is being held in the Kitsap County Jail and his bail is set at $5,000.

The other three suspects are still at large.
