Candidate Filings: Two contenders enter race for Bainbridge City Council's South Ward
June 1, 2009 · Updated 10:58 PM
Islanders Kirsten Hytopoulos and Tim Jacobsen announced their candidacies for Bainbridge City Council's South Ward position Monday. The seat is currently held by Chris Snow, who is still undecided on whether to run again.
Hytopoulos, who lives on Blakely Court East, is a former prosecuting attorney and founder of Green Voices for Bainbridge Island. She was also recently involved in organizing the Water Resources Action Committee.
Hytopoulos said her candidacy will be focused on environmental issues and fiscal responsibility.
“It’s time to recommit our city government to the community’s shared vision,” Hytopoulos said in a statement. “Which includes preserving our unique island character and way of life while living within our means, fiscally and environmentally.”
Jacobsen is a certified public accountant on Bainbridge, and serves as the chair of the city's Salary Commission.
The Bill Point resident said he believes his background would be an asset on the council.
"Very honestly I feel that I have experience and talent that can benefit Bainbridge Island," Jacobsen said.
Jacobsen is also active in the Boys and Girls Club and is an avid sailor. He has had a home on the island since 1997.
According to the Kitsap County Auditor's office, Hytopoulos and Jacobsen were the only candidates to file for Bainbridge City Council positions Monday.
Central Ward incumbent Kjell Stoknes announced Monday that he would not seek reelection.
The candidate filing period for the Nov. 3 election ends at 5 p.m. Friday.
