Wilkes students have unplanned fire drill
Students at Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary had an unscheduled fire drill Monday morning after a fire alarm went off just before the 7:50 a.m. bell.
Students were taken to the bus loop, according to an email sent out by the school after the alarm. The Bainbridge Island Fire Department responded to the school and turned off the alarm.
The cause of the alarm is still under investigation, according to the school.
"As of now, it is looking like an alarm in one of the wings was either pulled or hit as students were putting away backpacks and coats," the email said.
Students were outside for about 10 minutes, and the staff said the start-of-the-day alarm was a good practice run.
"Students who were coming in waited with adults in the covered plaza area by the office until they saw their teacher/class and then joined them. It was a great drill for us because we actually had to account for all students who were missing from classes as the teachers hadn't even taken attendance yet," the school said in its email.
