The Kitsap County Republican Party has offered up its two picks in the upcoming Bainbridge Island City Council races.

The organization announced on its website that it was recommending Arlene Buetow in the Central Ward, Position 5 race and Richard "Dick" Haugan in the North Ward, Position 7 race.

Buetow is running against Wayne Roth for the Central Ward seat, while Haugan is contesting Val Tollefson for the North Ward seat.

According to the website for the Kitsap County Republican Party, the executive board made its selections on Monday, Oct. 7.

The board did not voice a choice in the South Ward, Position 3 council race between Dee McComb and Roger Townsend.

Positions on the Bainbridge Island City Council are non-partisan, but this week's entry into the race by the Kitsap County GOP is not the first partisan suggestion this election season for Bainbridge council seats.

The membership of the 23rd Legislative District Democrats selected three council candidates in late July, and voted to endorse Roth, Tollefson and Townsend.

The 23rd Legislative District Democrats requires candidates to official seek an endorsement, and Roth, Tollefson and Townsend did, along with Buetow, who was passed over by the group.

An appeal for the group's endorsement of Haugan was also unsuccessful at the 23rd Legislative District Democrats' endorsement meeting on July 30.

Chris Tibbs, county chairman for the Kitsap County Republican Party, said the recommendations were based on suggestions made by a committee that reviewed candidates for public office, and are not based on a candidate's political ideology.

A more extensive process is in place for candidates who are endorsed by the party, Tibbs said.
