UPDATE | Senior center burglars entered through rear window

Bainbridge detectives are continuing to investigate a theft at the island's senior center where computers and a TV were stolen.

The senior center wing of the Waterfront Park Community Center was burglarized on the evening of Monday, July 29.

Nothing was damaged at the center, but it was clear the following day that something wasn't quite right.

"We discovered it Tuesday morning and things were amiss," said Barbara Cole, office manager for the senior center. "They went through all kinds of cupboards but didn't find anything they were interested in."

But the thieves did find something to take.

"They climbed through a rear window and took two computers, brand-new, and a flat-screen TV, and a laptop," Cole said.

Cole said the stolen items were valued at approximately $5,000.

The computers were for community use. Cole suspects that the thieves walked out a door to make their exit, instead of going through the window they entered.

Cole said that the center's offices were fortunately locked, however, the thieves rummaged through the lunchroom and the fireside room where members commonly hang out.

The facility had insurance against theft and the items will be replaced.

The center will also be installing a new alarm system soon.
