Islanders turned out in droves Wednesday night at city hall for the Department of Ecology's public hearing on the city's controversial update to its Shoreline Master Program, which was passed 4-3 by the council in May.

Roughly 30 people signed up to give testimony, but as the evening wore on, many citizens ceded their time to figureheads of their respective causes. It was a night of deep derision, simmering outrage and unbridled enthusiasm. Here's a look at that fateful night in photos.
