Bainbridge Island Review

Winslow could soon have Wi-Fi

April 25, 2013 · Updated 3:28 PM

Bainbridge Island City Manager Doug Schulze told the city council Wednesday that he will be giving the thumbs up this week to the Chamber of Commerce to begin providing wireless internet service to downtown Winslow.

"This week we will sign some agreements with the Chamber of Commerce for staring a downtown wireless system," Schulze said.

Wireless repeaters, about the size of a breadbox, will be mounted on top of city hall, Winslow Green, Winslow Mall and the Chamber of Commerce Building, creating a WiFi network available to downtown visitors.

Little details on the project have been available so far, and a start date for downtown wifi has not been announced.

Once the Winslow WiFi network is operating, the city may look to other parts of the island to expand WiFi access.

"The idea would be to have that pilot project up and running, see how well it works and perhaps replicate that in other parts of the community," Schulze said.
