Olson places high in diving

Olaf Olson is the first diver in Bainbridge Island history to qualify for the Junior National Diving Championships.

Olson began his trip to Nationals in the Region 10 Diving Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. Fellow Dive Club members Krissy Dickson, Stephanie Whalen and Shelby Mann also traveled to Palo Alto for the regional event.

Olson took third in the three-meter event with a score of 306.25. In the one-meter event he received straight sevens on his reverse one-and-a-half to finish second with a score of 323.25.

In the 16-18 year old girls one-meter springboard event Krissy Dickson finished off her Bainbridge Dive Club career with a 27th place finish and a score of 191.73. Stephanie Whalen placed 18th in the same event and a 12th place medal in the three-meter event with a score of 315.39.

Shelby Mann performed in the 14-15 girls bracket. She finished 18th in the one meter with a score of 181.71 and earned a 10th place medal in the three-meter event.

The girls failed to qualify for further competition, but Olson moved on to the Junior Diving West Zone Championships where he took 12th place in the three-meter event with a mark of 296.55, qualifying him for Nationals.

The Junior National Diving Championships are being held August 9-14 in Moultrie, Georgia.
