"Equipment believed to have been stolen from area construction sites was seized in the arrest of a transient near High School Road Thursday morning. The suspect, a male believed to be in his mid-20s and listing no address, was arrested without incident at a rude campsite in a wooded area between Kitsap Bank and Lumbermen's Building Center. He was taken to Kitsap County Jail on suspicion of burglary pending formal arraignment, according to Bainbridge Police reports.Officers found that the campsite was served by power, with a sturdy light and a radio connected by heavy-duty extension cords to an outlet in a pumphouse 100 yards away across the woods. The pumphouse door, which had been padlocked by the property owner, was found forced open. Police said they had contacted the suspect previously on unrelated matters, and discovered the items Thursday after calling the property owner and determining that no one was supposed to be camping on the grounds. It was unclear how long the suspect had been living there, or whether others had also been frequenting the area. Tarps and a hammock stretched between two trees, and a number of empty beer cans were scattered in a grassy clearing nearby.Items seized included an industrial-type propane heater and two propane tanks; a halogen construction light on a tripod base; a half-dozen heavy-duty extension cords; safety harness apparatus for working on scaffolding and roofs; several large brown tarps; a protective rubber face mask; and various hand tools. Also found were an aluminum rowing oar and a child's scooter.Anyone missing such items is asked to call Bainbridge Police at 842-5211.
