"Without ever seeking the limelight, Karen Kushner has earned countywide recognition.Kushner, co-owner of Windermere Real Estate, will be honored with a Woman of Achievement award by the YWCA of Kitsap County April 25.I'm kind of a shy person, said Kushner. I never expected this.Kushner describes book-keeping as her only real job, which islander Tarry Decker, who nominated Kushner for the award, says is typical of her self-effacing nature.Karen is quick to praise others and slow to take the credit for her own achievements, Decker said. The Woman of Achievement awards go to those whose accomplishments reflect on the good work of the community at large. Since Kushner moved to the island 25 years ago, she has worked as a volunteer and board member for Helpline House, whose services include crisis intervention, counseling, and employment referral. She later became a founding member of the island's Health, Housing and Human Services Council, helping to author a successful $100,000 grant proposal for that board's work in coordinating local youth and family services, including child care and after-school programs. Decker praised Kushner for encouraging the Bainbridge Island City Council to adopt a Comprehensive Plan in which such issues as education and health care were addressed. She also stressed Kushner's willingness to take a controversial stance. Decker cited Kushner's support for the Eagle Harbor liveaboard community, which she believes is an affordable housing alternative and preserves community diversity.Karen works for the benefit of our most valuable resource, Decker said. She works for people."
