The Bainbridge Island Transportation Benefit District approved a long-awaited fee on island vehicles at its Wednesday meeting. The $20 car-tab fee was approved by a 6-1 vote.
Board member Sarah Blossom was the only voice of opposition to the fee.
The new tax will likely go into effect six months after its passing. City officials estimate that the fee collected from over 18,000 island vehicles could raise over $330,000 for Bainbridge's ailing and underfunded roads. The car tab taxes will be paid to the Department of Licensing, which will take a 1 percent cut of the funds collected.
