Bainbridge High School students this week mourned one of their classmates, lost to a heart ailment.

Sixteen-year-old Alexandria P. Ornelas, a BHS junior, died “naturally and instantaneously” at her home Wednesday, the Kitsap County coroner’s office said.

Ornelas had a history of heart problems and had been ill and under a physician’s care for several days.

She was found on the floor and unresponsive by her father, Xavier Ornelas, Wednesday evening at their Adas Will Lane residence, but could not be revived by aid crews.

Ornelas’ death saddened the BHS community, Principal Brent Peterson said. She had been in island schools throughout her life, first at Wilkes Elementary and later at Sakai and Woodward.

Peterson described Ornelas as “a neat, quiet, fairly reserved student” who recently had gotten involved in the theater program.

“It’s always a huge impact when we have an unexpected loss of a student, and when she has friendships that extend all the way back to her elementary school years,” Peterson said.

No services are planned at this time.
