June 9, 2008 · Updated 2:32 PM
Environmental land use attorney Hilary Franz announced Monday that she will run for the City Council North Ward seat soon to be vacated by Councilman Bob Scales, who will not seek reelection.
Franz, a resident of Spargur Loop Road, will challenge law clerk Matthew van Winkle, who announced his candidacy for the position late last month.
She identified the preservation of open space, local agriculture and neighborhood parks as key issues.
An island resident for seven years, Franz has been active with the Bainbridge Island Trust for Working Landscapes and the Washington Environmental Council.
She is the executive director of the Exbiblio Foundation, a nonprofit focused on environmental conservation. Franz also works as a attorney handling cases in real estate, land use and environmental issues.
She holds a law degree from Northeastern University and a bachelors degree in English and government from Smith College.
Franz lives on Spargur Loop Road with her husband and three young sons.
