Bainbridge Island's new city manager is hitting the ground running this week and won't stop to take a break this weekend.
The island community is invited to meet new city manager Doug Schulze at a special event 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. It will be the first opportunity to meet the city's new top executive since the council made its decision to hire him in September.
"I'm looking forward to it," said Schulze, who began his new position with the city on Monday, Nov. 5.
"I'm trying to get all three of my kids over here for it," he added.
The city council will also be attending the meet-and-greet.
The event will also serve as a food drive for those in need during the Thanksgiving holiday through the island's Helpline House.
City hall will continue to take donations for the Helpline House from Nov. 11 to Nov. 17 in concert with the Town and Country Market, Safeway, Bainbridge Public Library and the members of the Interfaith Council. Islanders are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items appropriate for a Thanksgiving meal. Toiletry items will also be accepted.
Schulze, the former city manager for Normandy Park, has spent the first few days diving into his new job, absorbing as much information as he can.
"Day One was filled with meetings from the moment I arrived to the end of the day; meeting with council members and key staff members," Schulze said.
With only two days down, he already has started to chart a course for the city.
"The chief position is going to be a top priority for me during the next three to six months," Schulze said.
"The police management study is going to be one of the first things I want to move forward with — using information obtained from that to inform the position profile for the next chief of police."
"Hopefully that will give us some areas to focus on in terms of strengths that we need with the police department," he added.
