Plumber helps clear the air — and blocked pipe — at Bainbridge Island Police Station

Island police had to deal with quite a backup Monday.

But not with paperwork or traffic along Highway 305.

The Bainbridge Island Police Department took on a certain air earlier this week when the toilets at the station backed up and created a rather stinky situation.

The toilets at the island's police department on Winslow Way began flowing the wrong way Sunday night after a blockage in a pipe backed up the building's sewage.

The blockage was far down the line — all the way under the street, in fact. The fix required a plumber with a large snake tool to clear the line.

Staff at the police department later joked about Monday's stinky conditions. But the city's operations and maintenance department had the mess cleaned up by the end of the day.
