Officials at Commodore Options School announced late Tuesday that a case of pertussis had been confirmed in the school building.

The school notified parents via an email alert just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Commodore Options School is the umbrella school for three educational programs: Eagle Harbor High School, the Mosaic Home Education Partnership (K-8) and Odyssey Multiage Program. it is based on High School Road adjacent to Bainbridge High School.

State officials announced earlier this year that reports of whooping cough disease had reached epidemic levels in Washington.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that is spread by sneezing and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages but is most serious in infants, especially those too young to get vaccinated or who aren’t fully protected.

Pertussis causes cold-like symptoms and is followed by a long, severe cough that can last for weeks.
