Wilkes Elementary to open Tuesday

Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary School will open for the first day of classes on Tuesday, Sept. 4, officials with the Bainbridge Island School District announced late Friday.

District officials had planned to open the new school on Wednesday, but officials postponed the start of the school year due to ongoing construction at the school.

The district said the city of Bainbridge Island inspected the school Friday afternoon and has approved the occupancy permit for the building.
