Bainbridge Island Police seized a gun and 2 1/2 ounces of marijuana after a driver went off the road, struck a culvert and flipped his vehicle on Sportsman Club Road Sunday evening.
City officials said the driver, a 20-year-old resident of Bainbridge Island, allegedly told police he "must have fallen asleep" just before the crash.
While being looked over by medics, the driver allegedly admitted to police that he had smoked marijuana about an hour or two before getting behind the wheel. He also said that there may have been a partially consumed marijuana cigarette in the vehicle's ash tray.
Medics notified police after finding evidence of marijuana in the car. After investigating the scene, police took custody of 70 grams of marijuana, other drug paraphernalia, a handgun and ammunition.
The driver did not sustain any serious injuries, but was transported via helicopter to a hospital in Seattle for further medical evaluation.
The driver was arrested for driving under the influence. Additional charges are pending.
