Moriwaki No. 2 on county list
February 25, 2011 · Updated 10:37 AM
Clarence Moriwaki hasn’t given up hope of being a member of the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners despite being No. 2 on the Democratic Party’s nomination list.
A majority of the party’s Residential Precinct Committee officers voted Tuesday night to put Rob Gelder of Poulsbo on the top of their preferential list to replace Democrat Steve Bauer.
Commissioners Josh Brown and Charlotte Garrido will interview Gelder, Moriwaki and Poulsbo City Council member Linda Berry-Maraist and then make a choice, next month.
Sam Granato of Bainbridge and Laurie Seredahl of Poulsbo also applied for the position. Moriwaki was also a finalist in 2007 when Bauer was chosen.
Moriwaki said 44 of the party’s 60 precinct officers attended Tuesday’s three-hour meeting at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
“It’s a good process – transparent and thorough,” said Moriwaki. “It’s a partisan appointment by constitution, so it’s more about government than politics. The commissioners will choose who they think they can best work with, so I still think I’ve got a chance.”
The appointee will have to run in 2011 and 2012 to complete Bauer’s term, which expires in 2012.
