A fire that occurred at a home on the 1100 block of Wing Point Way early Sunday morning is being investigated as a possible arson.

“We have not established if it was arson, but labeled it as a suspicious fire,” said Police Commander Sue Shultz. The Bainbridge Island Fire Department is also involved as co-investigator of the fire.

The home has been vacant for several years and the property owner has allowed the property to deteriorate to the point where squatters moved in, according to one neighbor.

There was no one inside when the fire department arrived.

The fire occurred at about 1 a.m. and six trucks responded to the scene. It took about 15 minutes to put the fire out with a team of 15 fire fighters.

There have also been several reported burglaries recently in the area and Shultz said it is being investigated whether the burglaries and fire are connected.
