Mervyn H. Richardson, a 75-year-old Bainbridge Island man, died Saturday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross NE New Brooklyn Road near the corner of Madison Avenue.

Richardson died from blunt force injuries to the head, according to the Kitsap County Corner's Office.

The driver of a 1993 Chevrolet struck him at approximately 11:10 a.m. while driving westbound on New Brooklyn Road, according to Bainbridge Island police.

Police Commander Sue Shultz said a lack of attention from both the driver and Richardson appears to have caused the accident. Richardson was walking across the street to check the mail when he was struck.

The police report said an emergency response team reach the road within minutes, but Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck is cooperating with the investigation, police said, and there was no indication that drugs or alcohol had any factor in the accident.

Local police are continuing the investigation, with assistance from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol.
