State Rep. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge, is the No. 1 choice of Kitsap County Democratic Party precinct committee officers for appointment to the Senate seat vacated by Phil Rockefeller, who is now on the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. On the first ballot, Rolfes received 34 votes, county Planning Commissioner Jim Sommerhauser received six, and Poulsbo City Councilman Ed Stern received three.

They met the stringent requirements during the application and selection process. They worked, studied and practiced through more than 230 hours of classroom and practical training in the field. And with raised hands and the requisite administered oath of office, 19 candidates reached their goal of becoming commissioned reserve police officers or reserve sheriff’s deputies during graduation ceremonies for the West Sound Regional Reserve Academy, Class 2011-1, July 16 in Suquamish’s House of Awakened Culture.

Lawyer Drew Hansen of Bainbridge Island was the top choice of Democratic Party precinct committee officers for appointment to the 23rd District state House seat, Sunday. Legislative aide Holly Mortlock placed second, Poulsbo City Councilman Ed Stern placed third. There were six applicants for appointment.

Environmental officials believe the amount of diesel fuel that flowed into Rich Passage late Wednesday and Thursday was less than 100 gallons after a small but hot fire destroyed a shed and an air compressor at the fish-rearing pens off Bainbridge Island’s Beans Point.

Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson knows gridlock, and just not the political kind. Before she was mayor, she was chief financial officer of the Bainbridge Graduate Institute and a commuter. During rush hour “it could take 45 minutes to get across the island,” she said. Since joining the City Council and then becoming mayor, she’s been involved with leaders from the state, county and Suquamish Tribe in trying to improve the flow of traffic and eliminate snags, particularly at the 305/Suquamish Way intersection near the Agate Pass Bridge. Their work, and patience, are paying off.

In the front office of Fred Hill Materials, display cases reveal decades of public service: Sponsorship ribbons from prize-winning livestock at the Kitsap County Fair, certificates of appreciation, and Little League team photos of the many teams sponsored by the company. The 66-year-old company at one time had 130 employees. Now, Fred Hill Materials, a three-generation concrete materials supplier to the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas, has closed.
