Road policy faces another stiff challenge
Jun 09 2008, 9:07 PM Ah, another road end issue. Let’s try to make sense of it.

Island architect Ron Holsman wants to buy a house on an acre and a half overlooking Hidden Cove, but won’t sign a closing contract until another matter is resolved. The property includes the Hidden Cove public road end and Holsman seeks city approval to provide “improvements” that would eliminate most vehicle access on the bottom part of the dirt road (about 150 feet). Holsman would replace the road on his property with some trees and a “serpentine path” that would lead to the existing staircase to the water.

What would the city get in exchange? Presumably, a much-needed upgrade to the drainage system at the road end and maybe a parking place or two near the dead end, both provided by Holsman. Those details have eked out while negotiations between Holsman (and his attorney) and City Planner Peter Namtvedt Best (and an attorney and other city officials) have been occurring behind closed doors since December. The city’s Road End Advisory Committee has been involved only peripherally and has not seen Holsman’s proposal.

Survey one step toward reconnecting
Jun 09 2008, 9:07 PM There appears to be a curative stratagem occurring these days on Bainbridge Island, where politicians, social service professionals and caring individuals alike have decided islanders have become somewhat estranged from each other and need to reconnect. Has Bainbridge Island become unhealthy? Is there a growing chasm between the perceived haves and have nots, leading to a service gap for those in need? What do island residents think?

As part of the city Comprehensive Plan, the Health, Housing and Human Services Council currently is encouraging islanders to participate in an online survey that will help the agency define what makes a healthy community. The survey is part of an HHHS effort that has already gained information from a variety of established groups for the purpose of having the community measure its own well-being. The survey begins with a vision: “Bainbridge Island will function as a caring community that strives to maintain the well-being of all its members, a community where all members feel connected to the community and where each individual has opportunities to contribute to the community.”

Ferry system focusing on safety issues
Jun 09 2008, 9:07 PM Figuratively speaking, David Moseley, only 16 days into his new job as Assistant Secretary of Transportation, stood hat in hand Monday evening as he addressed ferry issues with a group of about 60 people at the Bainbridge Commons. The career bureaucrat told the audience, about half of whom either represented the Washington State Ferry System or were local politicians or ferry advisory committee members, that his charge was to “restore the public’s respect and confidence in the ferry system.”

Moseley appears to be a quick learner since he knew nothing about WSF when hired earlier this month but now knows that his task is a daunting one.
