Inaugural public art pieces now on display in Winslow

Installation of the first round of artwork to be publicly displayed as part the rotating showcase Something New is now complete.

A joint effort presided over by the Public Art Committee, Arts & Humanities Bainbridge and the city of Bainbridge Island, Something New aims to provide both a dynamic public art viewing experience and an ongoing opportunity for sculptors from around the Pacific Northwest to exhibit their work. The project has placed a trio of sculptures at three outdoor sites around Winslow for a yearlong exhibition, with new pieces will being selected and rotated into those same locations annually.

The three sculptures chosen to kick off the project are: “Hand in Hand” by Will Robinson; “Three Color Spires” by Gerry Newcomb; and “Iris Flare” by Lin McJunkin and Milo White.

The pieces can be seen in Waterfront Park; in the harborside plaza at the southern end of Madison Avenue; and along Winslow Way near its intersection with Ericksen Avenue, respectively.

A jury of Public Art Committee-nominated community members selected the first pieces from a sizeable a pool of submissions. Nearly 30 sculptors from around the Pacific Northwest reportedly submitted work for consideration.

“We wanted each of the chosen sculptures to make a statement appropriate to their specific locations,” said Public Art Committee chairman Carl Sussman. “There were many truly beautiful and exciting pieces, so it was hard to choose only three.”

Something New will have its official unveiling at 6 p.m. Friday, July 6, coinciding with the First Friday Art Walk.

Public Art Committee members and volunteers will guide guests on a walking tour of the new pieces, and the sculptors will be on hand at each site to present their work.

A shuttle will be available for those not inclined to walk the tour route, which will start from a station on Winslow Way between Columbia Bank and Chase Bank.
