Eagle Harbor Books to host doubleheader author event

Eagle Harbor Book Company will host two visiting authors Sunday, Jan. 22.

First, at 1 p.m., Adrienne Ross Scanlan will discuss her memoir “Turning Homeward.”

Set in Seattle and Western Washington’s urban, suburban and other so-called altered landscapes, “Turning Homeward” creates an accessible narrative of the complicated joys of rolling up one’s sleeves and reaching out to help repair our beautiful, broken world. While not a straightforward memoir, Scanlan weaves her personal story with the natural history of Puget Sound and the complex issues around urban renewal and river restoration.

Then, at 3 p.m., Lori Tsugawa Whaley will visit and speak about her book “The Courage of a Samurai: Seven Sword-Sharp Principles for Success.”

Who were the samurai and how could a people dedicated to war and violence have such an impact on a culture known for its politeness, manners and aesthetic beauty? The samurai warrior of ancient Japan lived by a moral and ethical code known as bushido: the way of the warrior. This code of chivalry sculpted a culture and influenced all aspects of Japanese society, lasting to today.

“The Courage of a Samurai” presents these principles as a guide for navigating the challenges we all face, with examples of individuals who exemplify their meaning in today’s world.

Both events are free to attend. No reservation is required.
