‘Bullitt’ is back at Bainbridge Cinemas

“Bullitt,” the 1968 crime thriller starring Steve McQueen, will return to the big screen for a special one-day-only anniversary screening at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Bainbridge Cinemas.

Tickets, $12.50 each, are on sale now at www.farawayentertainment.com.

Directed by Peter Yates, and based on the 1963 novel “Mute Witness” by Robert L. Fish, the film was a critical and box-office smash immediately, later winning the Academy Award for Best Film Editing and receiving a nomination for Best Sound. Also, the screenplay writers won a 1969 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay.

McQeen plays the titular gritty cop, who becomes determined to find the underworld kingpin who killed the witness in his protection.

“Bullitt” is also notable for its central car chase scene, which takes place through the streets of San Francisco, widely regarded as one of the most influential in movie history.

In 2007, “Bullitt” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
