Co-author David Hanson of “Breaking Through Concrete” will present a slide talk and Friends of the Farm will be on hand with information about farming on Bainbridge Island at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22 at Eagle Harbor Book Company.

David Hanson is a freelance writer and photographer, and his brother, Michael, is an award-winning travel photographer.

In their book “Breaking Through Concrete,” the Hansons join urban farmer Edwin Marty to document a dozen successful urban farm programs, including an alternative school for girls in Detroit, a backyard food swap in New Orleans and a restaurant supply garden on a rooftop in Brooklyn. Marty is founder of Jones Valley Urban Farm in Birmingham, Ala.

The book offers practical advice for budding farmers, such as composting and keeping livestock in the city, decontaminating toxic soil and changing zoning laws.
